Abstract

There are debates on whether the New-type Rural Cooperative Medical Care System(NCMS) crowds out or improves the rural demand for commercial medical insurance among existing research literature.Based on the data sets from 2004 to 2009 initiated by China Health and Nutrition Survey(CHNS),we used Difference in Difference method(DID) and probit model to investigate the factors affecting rural demands for commercial medical insurance and the effects of NCMS.The empirical results revealed that the NCMS and the commercial medical insurance changed from substitutes to complements.Furthermore, age, having chronic disease or not, family size and household income all had significant negative effects on the demand for commercial medical insurance, which supported the existence of adverse selection in commercial medical insurance.
