Abstract

Introduction: The efficient planning of any scientifically valid research project usually involves extensive interactions between a scientific or clinical investigator and a collaborating biostatistician. In carrying out such collaborations, it may be useful to provide structure that will ensure that all pertinent topics are covered in a logical order. In
this chapter, we recommend introducing structure to the planning process through the use of our version of ‘20 questions’, denoted Q1 through Q20.
This chapter contains sections titled:
Defining the research topic
Identifying and developing the best study design
Addressing logistical, funding, ethical, regulatory issues
Attending to details which ensure success
