Abstract

Objective To understand calcium intake and its food sources,as well as its trend in Chinese 18-49 years old adults.Method The data of daily calcium intake and its distribution of food sources in 18-49 aged old adults in Chinese Health and Nutrition Survey(CHNS) during 1991 to 2009 were utilized for analysis.Results The average intakes of calcium in Chinese males and females were 415.3 g/d and 367.3g/d respectively in 2009,showing an increasing trend since 1991.The percentages of individuals taking calcium daily over AI were 6.6%,6.6%,2.8% and 4.3% among males and 2.8%,3.6%,2.6%,and 2.1% among females in city,suburb,town and village respectively.The main food sources of dietary calcium were vegetables,legumes and cereals,which accounted together over 70% of the total daily intake.However,the calcium from dairy foods only attributed to 4% of the total daily calcium intake.Conclusion During last 20 years,the average daily calcium intake of Chinese adults still remained at low level.Deficient intake of calcium from dairy and legumes mainly accounted for the low intake of calcium.
