Abstract

Data from the 1989 China Health & Nutrition Survey are drawn on to examine household economic patterns within the context of the reforms of the late 1980s. Rural & urban households (N = 2,517 & 1,275, respectively) are compared in terms of employment sector, mode of production, & occupation/industry, revealing great diversity both within & between areas. Household economic strategies are identified, noting whether there is coordination among family members; effects of household size & rural/urban residence are examined, along with the specific effects of household gender composition. 6 Tables, 1 Appendix.
