This chapter begins by contrasting current physical activity levels in children with the recommendations. Elements of behavioural theory are introduced.The authors present six criteria for "good" theories of of health behaviour on which to base interventions and promote the development of theory-based observational research as a way of developing a knowledge base regarding ways to increase childrens' physical activity. They then describe four strategies for promoting physical activity and discuss hot topics in physical activity research.
